Course Description

• Social Work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities, and indigenous knowledge where it engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing.
• Psychology the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It plays an important place in social work where service-users (or clients) has to be understood from their internal (psychological) world and external (social) world.
• This course will introduce basic psychological theories, concepts and models that is applicable in the social work context where it’s used as a guide in understanding people they are working with as well as employing suitable interventions.

What will students learn in the course?

• Understand basic psychological perspectives used in social work
• Understand how psychological perspective is used to understand a person's sense of self
• Understand how key psychological concepts explain social interaction between people that may cause behavioural change
• Describe some psychological therapies that is used in social work practice context
