Cambridge A Level is one of the most prominent pre-university programmes worldwide. A Cambridge education prepares students for life, helping them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) is one of the earliest tertiary institutions in Malaysia to offer the Cambridge A Level programme as an education pathway for school leavers to further their studies globally.
Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards (OCLA) are a group of awards issued by Cambridge Assessment International Education who recognise exceptional performance of learners around the world in Cambridge examinations. The awards are divided into few categories, with the key ones being Top in the World, Top in Country (Malaysia) and High Achievement (awarded for outstanding results in subjects which are not so widely taken).
Cambridge awards are calculated using stringent and confidential criteria that operate to maintain high educational standards and values in awards across countries, subjects, and qualification levels. Learners only receive awards if they have achieved outstanding results.
To-date, MCKL has produced 132 OCLA recipients since 2013, and 100% average pass rate for eight consecutive years for its Cambridge A Level programme. Its students have been awarded Top in the World, Top in Malaysia, and High Achievements for various subjects, granting students entry to top universities locally and globally.
Luna Freyja Binti Ahmad Nazir enrolled with MCKL for the Cambridge A Level programme in 2017, and after two attempts, was awarded High Achievement for her A Level Literature In English. On why she had enrolled with MCKL, she explained that the breadth of subjects it offered in humanities under the A Level syllabus had appealed to her.
“I selected the subjects I wished to enrol, and the combinations seemed like an opportunity that was unmatched anywhere else. The lecturers also nurtured my love for the humanities in a way that I did not experience in secondary school. There were multiple opportunities for active learning, creative and critical engagements, and interactions! They would direct me to resources that I could further research on my interests for my personal knowledge,” she said.
Luna has been accepted into University of Edinburgh to do English Literature and Classics.
MCKL Cambridge AS Level students, Nathaniel Inn Tsin Qian and Ethan Kor Zhi-De, were also honoured for their hard work and achievements. Nathaniel was awarded Top in the World for his AS Level in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, while Ethan received Top in the World recognition for his AS Level in Mathematics.
Nathaniel said his lecturers have been extremely enthusiastic about their respective subjects and were very willing to give extra help and cater to different students’ needs, and that it has inspired him to do the same and carry out everything he does with excellence.
“I believe in concentrating on the journey rather than the end goal. I realised that this belief helped me to enjoy the learning process and kept me excited to learn. It also taught me to not be too discouraged with disappointing results in practise papers but to search for how I could improve from each mistake,” he said.
