MCKL’s High Achievers Soaring Overseas: From MCKL to the World

From MCKL to the world, our high achievers continue to make waves at top universities across the globe. Two such outstanding alumni, Damien Chim and Sia Rei Zen, have exemplified excellence in their academic journeys, earning full scholarships to the University of Sydney and Kyoto University, respectively. Their stories showcase how determination, strategic planning, and the right academic foundation can lead to incredible opportunities.

Damien Chim: A Leap of Faith to A Level and Beyond

Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science at the University of Sydney on a full scholarship, Damien Chim’s achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. His accolades include securing a Top in the World score for AS Level Physics during the Outstanding Cambridge Learners Award, November 2023 Exam Series—an exceptional feat that cements his place among the brightest young minds in the field. For Damien, the decision to enrol in Cambridge A Level (CAL) at MCKL was driven by opportunity and ambition.

“After high school, I was unsure about which field to pursue, so I decided on A Levels. Upon research, it was clear that MCKL is among the top providers in Malaysia. When I saw that they had just set up a campus in Penang with generous scholarships, I took a leap of faith. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have made.”

This choice provided Damien with a strong academic foundation and ultimately led him to one of his greatest achievements—the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award for AS Level Physics. Earning the Top in the World award for Physics was a defining moment.

“This award is a testament to my passion for Physics. I have dedicated an extensive amount of effort to mastering it, and this recognition is incredibly rewarding—not just for me but also for my parents and my lecturer, Mr. Ban, who supported me every step of the way.”

His dedication and perseverance paved the way for his full scholarship to the University of Sydney, where he now pursues his passion in Computer Science.

Damien highlights the importance of deep understanding and consistent practice

“To excel in A Levels, you need to understand the concepts thoroughly before applying them. The questions can be tricky, and surface-level knowledge won’t be enough. Practice is key—keep testing yourself and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed.”

Sia Rei Zen: A Journey to Kyoto University with AUSMAT

From MCKL to Kyoto University, Sia Rei Zen’s story is one of resilience, strategic planning, and academic excellence. As a Western Australian Certificate of Education (AUSMAT) graduate at MCKL, Sia is now pursuing a Degree in Economics at Kyoto University on a full scholarship—an achievement he describes as surreal.

For Sia, choosing AUSMAT at MCKL was a calculated decision.

“MCKL offered the right mix of structure and support, making it an ideal place to focus on academics and get the most out of the AUSMAT programme.”

His efforts paid off in the best way possible—gaining entry into one of Japan’s most prestigious universities on a full scholarship.

“It felt surreal. Everything I worked so hard for finally paid off. Getting into Kyoto University without financial worries was an incredible blessing, reminding me that all those late nights and sacrifices were worth it.”

Sia attributes much of his success to the supportive learning environment at MCKL. Being surrounded by driven and supportive classmates made a huge difference, keeping him motivated throughout his studies. His teachers played a crucial role, taking the time to help him understand complex material and providing encouragement when challenges arose. Their guidance had a significant impact on his confidence and academic performance. The final stretch before exams was particularly intense, filled with late-night study sessions, group revisions, and the mounting pressure to excel. Although exhausting, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of his journey, preparing him for future challenges.

Sia urges AUSMAT students to be prepared for a rigorous but rewarding journey.

“Time management is key. Start building solid study habits early, and don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers and friends for support. AUSMAT opens many doors—stay focused and take it one step at a time.”

A Legacy of Excellence at MCKL

Both Damien Chim and Sia Rei Zen’s journeys illustrate how MCKL provides the right academic foundation, guidance, and opportunities for students to thrive at top universities worldwide. Their inspiring stories serve as a beacon for future MCKL students, proving that with determination, perseverance, and the right support, global success is within reach.
