The 2026 Autism Acceptance Campaign, held on 25 April 2026, brought together 21 student volunteers from MCKL’s Pre-University and Diploma programmes to champion the theme “Unlabelled”. More than just a volunteer initiative, the event served as a practical application of MCKL’s signature courses, Character Formation and Service Learning, in line with the vision of “MCKL 4.0: Excellence for Life” to provide a holistic education that nurtures well-rounded individuals.
A Holistic Approach to Education
Character Formation, a compulsory course across all programmes, is designed to support students’ growth in emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions. Through their involvement in the “Unlabelled” campaign, students extended their learning beyond classroom learning by reflecting on their core values and understanding how these values can translate into meaningful contributions to society.
Complementing this, the Service-Learning course requires students to engage in organised activities that address real community needs. Participation in the campaign provided students with the opportunity to actively promote autism awareness and inclusion, while fulfiling a key component of their character development journey.
The "Unlabelled" Experience: From Booths to the Stage
The campaign’s theme, “Unlabelled,” served as a powerful reminder to look beyond diagnoses and recognise everyone for who they are. MCKL volunteers supported a wide range of activities throughout the event, including promoting products, engaging visitors, serving food, packing items, and managing sales.
These responsibilities enabled students to develop essential soft skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and basic financial management. They were also entrusted with handling coupons, including collecting, calculating, and submitting them accurately, which reinforced accountability and attention to detail.
The most impactful aspect of the event, however, was the direct interaction with members of the autism community. Many volunteers worked alongside autistic individuals, gaining meaningful insights into inclusiveness, collaboration, and empathy. These interactions allowed students to recognise and appreciate the diverse abilities and strengths within the community.
A highlight of the campaign was the series of stage performances by autistic individuals. These performances demonstrated remarkable creativity, confidence, and talent, effectively challenging stereotypes and bringing the “Unlabelled” message to life.
A Lasting Impact on Civic Responsibility
As key components of MCKL’s curriculum, Character Formation and Service Learning play a vital role in shaping students holistically. Through Character Formation, students develop a sense of purpose and learn how to contribute meaningfully to society. Service-Learning complements this by providing hands-on experiences that address real-world needs.
Participation in this campaign strengthened students’ sense of civic responsibility while deepening their understanding of neurodiversity. Students left with a renewed awareness that every individual is unique and deserves an environment where they can thrive.
Ultimately, this experience reflects MCKL’s commitment to integrating real-world learning into academic life, producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially conscious and ethically grounded.
