Guide: Library Classification System


Library materials are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification system (LC).  Each LC number represents a subject. The LC number makes up part of a call number that is labelled on library materials. The call number is a guide to finding materials in the library. 

Below is an example of a call number and what it means. 
For example:

Title:

Biology: The Essentials by Marielle Hoefnagels

Represent the class for Biology subject

Specific number for the Essentials of Biology Subject
H64
First three letters of the author's surname, "Hoefnagels"
2013
Book's publication year
C.1
First copy of this title
